Most shop owners set up their Google Business Profile once, fill in the hours and address, and never go back. Fair enough, there's a business to run, and nobody got into auto repair because they dreamed of managing a listing. But tucked inside that same free listing is a feature most shops never use: Google Posts, a simple way to publish updates, offers, and photos that show up directly in your search results and on the map, no website edit required.
Here's what it actually is, what to post as an auto repair shop, and how often to bother.
What a Google Post actually is
Think of it like a tiny, free ad slot attached to your business listing. When someone searches your shop name, or finds you in the map pack, your most recent posts can show up right there, a photo, a short message, and a button like "Call Now" or "Learn More." It costs nothing and takes about two minutes to publish, less time than it takes a customer to explain the noise their car is making.
There are a few post types worth knowing:
- Offer — a specific promotion with a start and end date, like a seasonal discount.
- Update — a general announcement, new service, a holiday hours change, anything timely.
- Event — for something with a specific date, like a community open house.
For most shops, a mix of Offer and Update posts does the job without needing to overthink the format.
Why it's worth the two minutes
Google tends to favor listings that show signs of being actively managed, the same idea that came up in our SEO guide about reviews needing to be recent, not just plentiful. Regular posts are one more signal that there's a real, active business behind the listing, not an abandoned one, the digital equivalent of a shop with the lights on and someone actually inside. They also give a browsing searcher one more reason to pick you: a recent post about a brake special sitting right next to your listing can tip a close decision in your favor.
What to actually post as a repair shop
You don't need a content calendar full of clever ideas, or a cousin who's "good with Instagram." A handful of simple, repeatable post types cover almost everything:
- A seasonal reminder. "Getting ready for winter? Ask about our brake and battery check." Tied loosely to the season, easy to write.
- A specific service highlight. A short post about one service, transmission diagnostics, AC repair, with a photo of your shop or team.
- A limited-time offer. $20 off an oil change this month, clearly dated so it doesn't look stale later.
- A real customer win. With permission, a quick "Thanks to [name] for trusting us with their truck" paired with a photo.
- Hours or holiday changes. Simple, useful, and exactly the kind of thing people search for right before they need it.
Real photos outperform stock images here too, the same rule that applies to your Google Business Profile photos in general applies to posts.
How often to post
Once a week is a reasonable, sustainable target. Google Posts also expire after about seven days for Offer and Update types, so posting weekly keeps something current showing at all times instead of an old, expired post sitting there looking neglected. If weekly feels like too much, even a couple of posts a month beats zero, just know that the visibility fades the longer a post sits unexpired.
Common mistakes
- Posting once and forgetting about it. A single post from eight months ago does nothing for you today, same as a calendar still flipped to a month that's long gone.
- Making every post a hard sell. A mix of helpful updates and the occasional offer reads better than constant "BOOK NOW" pressure.
- Using blurry or stock photos. A real photo from your shop, even an imperfect one, beats a generic stock image every time.
- Forgetting a clear next step. Every post should have an obvious button or action, don't make someone guess what to do next.
Where to start this week
- Log into your Google Business Profile and find the "Posts" section (it's usually right on the main dashboard).
- Write one simple post about a current service or seasonal reminder.
- Add a real photo, not a stock image.
- Set a recurring reminder to post weekly, or at minimum, monthly.
