A shop owner comes to us convinced their ads don't work. Clicks look fine, impressions look fine, and the phone still barely rings. Nine times out of ten, the ads aren't the problem, the same way a stalled car usually isn't the battery's fault just because it's the easiest part to blame. The website the ads are sending people to is quietly losing them before they ever pick up the phone.
Here's where that leak usually happens, and the fixes that actually close it.
What conversion rate actually means here
Conversion rate is simply the share of visitors who take the action you want, in your case, calling or booking. If 100 people click your ad and 3 of them call, that's a 3% conversion rate. There's no universal "good" number since it depends heavily on the service and the traffic source, but if you're seeing well under 2-3% from search ads, something on the website side is usually worth a closer look before blaming the ad itself.
Where clicks usually leak out
1. Sending every click to the homepage
If someone clicked an ad for "brake repair," landing on a general homepage that talks about your whole business makes them do extra work to find what they were promised. Every bit of extra work loses a percentage of visitors, nobody clicking a brake ad wants a scavenger hunt through your "About Us" page. Send brake-repair clicks to a page about brake repair, with the phone number and booking button right there.
2. A phone number that's hard to find
This sounds almost too simple to matter, and yet it's one of the most common fixes we make. On mobile especially, your number needs to be visible without scrolling, and tapping it should dial immediately. If someone has to hunt for how to contact you, a real share of them will just leave instead, same as a customer who gets put on hold for five minutes and hangs up.
3. Slow load times
A site that takes several seconds to load loses visitors before they even see it, especially on mobile data in a parking lot with one bar of signal, which describes roughly every driver who's ever had a tire blow out. Large uncompressed images are the most common cause. Pages should load in two seconds or less.
4. No trust signals above the fold
A new visitor from an ad doesn't know you yet. If the first thing they see is just a generic headline with no reviews, no star rating, no mention of how long you've been in business, they have no reason to trust you over the next shop in the results. A few real reviews or a rating badge near the top does a lot of quiet work.
5. A confusing or missing call to action
Every page should make the next step obvious: one clear button, "Book Now" or "Call Now," not three competing options fighting for attention. A page with five different links pulling in five different directions usually converts worse than one with a single, obvious action.
6. Forms that ask for too much
If you do have a contact form, every extra field is a reason to abandon it. Name, phone, and what they need, that's usually enough to get the conversation started. Save the rest for the phone call.
A simple way to check your own site
Pull up your site on your phone, pretend you're a stranger who just clicked an ad for your top service, and time how long it takes you to find the phone number or booking button. If it takes more than a few seconds, or more than one or two taps, that's exactly what's costing you conversions.
Fix the leak before adding more water
It's tempting to respond to a quiet phone by spending more on ads. Sometimes that's the right call, but it's worth checking the website first. Fixing a conversion leak is usually cheaper than buying more traffic to pour through the same hole, patching the bucket beats buying more water, and the fix sticks around for every future visitor, not just the ones from this month's budget.
Want a second set of eyes?
We don't just run your ads, we look at where the clicks actually go. B.E. Classics builds Google and Facebook campaigns exclusively for auto repair shops, and that includes checking whether your website is actually set up to turn that traffic into booked appointments.
